Trump speaks to Saudi King, announces action he’s taking over disappearance of Saudi journalist

Trump tweeted this morning that he’s immediately sending his Secretary of State to Saudi Arabia to meet with King Salman, who denies knowing regarding what happened to the Saudi journalist and Washington Post columnist Jamal Khashoggi:

Just spoke to the King of Saudi Arabia who denies any knowledge of whatever may have happened “to our Saudi Arabian citizen.” He said that they are working closely with Turkey to find answer. I am immediately sending our Secretary of State to meet with King!

Trump says that the King told him they are working closely with Turkey to figure out what happened. But if this is any indication, they aren’t working as ‘closely’ as he suggested:

Cleaning crew was brought in to #SaudiArabia consulate in Istanbul before Riyadh reportedly agreed to #Turkey’s demand for a search of the premise where journo #Khashoggi was las seen entering.

I’m sure they were just there to dust, right?

Trump has already promised “severe punishment” for Saudi Arabia if it’s proven that they killed Khashoggi.

Just now, as Trump was taking questions from reporters on this, he suggested the King’s denial was strong, calling it a “flat denial”. He even suggested that perhaps rogue Saudis were behind whatever happened to Khashoggi. But he added that we really don’t know and that’s why he’s sending Pompeo to that area of the world. He gave Pompeo latitude to go wherever he needed to go while looking into this.
