How abdicated King Edward would FLY his BREAKFAST over from England when exiled in France

Edward gave up his throne on December 11, 1936, in order to marry American divorcee Wallis Simpson, and his younger brother became King George VI. Edward, now known as the Duke of Windsor, was living in exile in a French castle in 1937, where he was waiting to marry his love, Mrs Simpson. According to the Channel 5 documentary ‘Inside Fortnum and Mason: The Queen’s Grocer’ he flew in fresh fish from Northumberland to have for breakfast every single morning.

The fish was supplied by the luxury grocer Fortnum and Mason, a favourite of the Queen.

In the documentary, food writer and historian Angela Clutton fried up a kipper and prepared it how the Duke of Windsor would have enjoyed his breakfast during this time.

She said: “See this is just like the kippers Edward would have had every day, and he wasn't getting them from any local fishmonger.

“Fortnum and Mason were flying them over every single day for him to have.

“They were craster kippers from Northumberland – very heavily smoked, very very oaky.

“And he must have loved them because every day breakfast that’s what he had when he was living in France waiting to marry Wallis.

“And there is your breakfast fit for a king!”

The Duke of Windsor married Mrs Simpson on June 3, 1937 at Château de Candé, near Tours.

Members of the Royal Family were forbidden from attending by George VII, which was to be a long-term resentment of the Duke and Duchess of Windsor.

However, according to the documentary Edward still intended on eating “like a king”.

In 2016, Fortnum and Mason released their recipes for the first time in more than 300 years, including instructions of how to make the Duke’s favourite smoked kipper breakfast.

Other dishes in the cookbook include the picnic allegedly enjoyed by Charles Dickens and a steak tartare eaten by Terence Stamp.

Meanwhile, the Duke of Windsor was not even the first Royal to favour products from Fortnum and Mason.

His grandfather Edward VII even had a tea blend made just for him – the Royal Blend – which remains the store’s most popular blend to this day.

Queen Elizabeth II is said to enjoy a Fortnum and Mason’s Earl Grey tea every morning, while Assam tea is also available in Buckingham Palace.
