The 100: Is This the End of Clarke as We Know Her? | TV Guide

Whenever something seems too good to be true on The 100, you can bet it's actually going to turn out to be heart-stoppingly terrible. And that's exactly what happened with Sanctum in Tuesday's episode.

Though Clarke and the gang didn't really understand the Naming Day ceremony Sanctum was celebrating, they decided to make the most of it and at least attempt to take part in the celebration. After all, giving someone the name of one of the original settlers of the planet wasn't so bad, right? Wrong. So, so, so wrong. As it turns out, Russell (J.R. Bourne) and the other Primes weren't merely descendants of the people who'd settled the planet, they were hosts bodies housing the immortal consciousnesses of those people housed in Flame-like technology.

We got the first clue about their true identities when Delilah (Ashleigh LaThrop) returned from her Naming ceremony and showed no recognition of Jordan (Shannon Kook) and even called another Prime her own age "son." Weird. Unfortunately, Clarke (Eliza Taylor) wasn't around to see the odd behavior because she was shacked up with Cillian (Carlo Marks), who turned out to be the Children of Gabriel's spy. Before Cillian could smuggle Clarke and her "black blood" out beyond the radiation barrier, Russell's soldiers intervened. But by that point, Clarke had been injected with a paralytic, making her helpless. Rather than getting her back on her feet, Russell and his wife took her deep into Sanctum and planned a much worse fate for her.

Once there, they revealed that they were, in fact, the original Lightborns, kept alive all these years by transplanting their consciousnesses into new Nightblood bodies, effectively making them immortal. Nightbloods were becoming rarer in their society though, and they'd recently begun to believe they were on the brink of mortality. Their daughter, previously mentioned as having a fall and supposedly dying, was going to have to wait over 50 years to be reborn once another host body was available, but with the arrival of Clarke (and what they hoped would be more host bodies in her group), Russell jumped at the chance to get his daughter back using Clarke's body.

Still immobilized, Clarke cried angry tears of defeat before succumbing to the procedure that would erase her mind and replace it with Josephine's. In the final moments of the episode, Clarke awakened, but she was no longer the girl we know and love. Instead, she was twirling her hair like Josephine did in the Episode 2 flashback with a personality transplant to boot.

So... is Clarke dead? And if she's not, how much of her is left inside the body Josephine is now controlling? More importantly, will Bellamy (Bob Morley) be able to tell the difference between his Clarke and this new imposter in time to save Madi (Lola Flanery) from the same fate?

The 100 airs Tuesdays at 9/8c on The CW.
