Dual-Layer Solar Cell Sets Energy Conversion Record

Dual-Layer Solar Cell Sets Energy Conversion RecordSep-09-18 A dual-layer solar cell coated with a thin layer of perovskite outperforms conventional solar panels at harvesting solar energy.

A team from UCLA created the dual-level solar cell by applying a layer of perovskite to a standard solar cell made up of a copper, indium, gallium and selenide compound called CIGS. Perovskite, which is made of lead and iodine, is an inexpensive material that has been proven to capture solar energy very efficiently. In tests, the dual-layer cell was able to convert 22.4 percent of solar energy, setting a new record

According to professor Yang Yang, “We’re drawing energy from two distinct parts of the solar spectrum over the same device area. This increases the amount of energy generated from sunlight compared to the CIGS layer alone.”
